THE U.S. GOVERNMENT MUST TAKE ACTION NOW TO SAVE THE LIVES OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS IN PUERTO RICO

Today is National Latino AIDS Awareness Day. And President Bush and HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt know there's an AIDS crisis in Puerto Rico.

• Millions of dollars that could pay for health care and services have been misspent or unspent.
• Audit after audit of Ryan White CARE Act expenditures in Puerto Rico have found mismanagement, fraud, and failure to provide basic lifesaving care.
• As a result, new HIV infections, new AIDS diagnoses and deaths from AIDS in Puerto Rico are disproportionately high and getting higher.

Last February AIDS activists, advocates and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus asked for "prompt and decisive action" on the Puerto Rico AIDS crisis from HHS Secretary Leavitt — but nothing has happened.

Now it's time for you to demand action that could save lives.

CALL HHS SECRETARY MICHAEL LEAVITT TOLL-FREE AT 888-802-1207 AND TELL HIM:

"People with AIDS are dying in Puerto Rico because you haven't taken action to help them.

We need an immediate federal receivership for AIDS funding in Puerto Rico to ensure medical care and HIV prevention get to people who don't have it.

We need an independent authority to investigate the mismanagement and come up with a plan to end it.

And we need immediate action to provide HIV prevention tools to IV drug users and empowerment efforts to fight stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS."

EL GOBIERNO DE LOS EE.UU. NECESITA TOMAR ACCIÓN AHORA MISMO PARA SALVAR LAS VIDAS DE PERSONAS VIVIENDO CON VIH/SIDA EN PUERTO RICO

Hoy es el Día Nacional Latino para la Concientización del SIDA. Y el Presidente de EE.UU., George W. Bush, y el Secretario del Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos, Michael Leavitt, saben que hay una crisis de SIDA en Puerto Rico.

• Millones de dólares que podrían pagar por cuidado médico y servicios de salud han sido malgastados o no usados.
• En ocasiones múltiples, auditorías del dinero usado bajo la Ley de Emergencia Ryan White sobre Recursos Integrales para el SIDA en Puerto Rico han encontrado que hay mal manejo de fondos, fraude y fracaso en la provisión de cuidado básico de salud que salva vidas.
• Como resultado de todo esto, en Puerto Rico los casos nuevos de VIH, los nuevos diagnósticos de SIDA y las muertes por causa del SIDA son desproporcionadamente altos y siguen subiendo.

En Febrero del 2007 activistas y aliados en la lucha contra el SIDA, y la Camarrilla Política Hispana del Congreso de EE.UU. le pidió al Secretario Leavitt acción inmediata y decisiva sobre la crisis de SIDA en Puerto Rico — pero nada ha ocurrido.

Ha llegado la hora que usted demande la acción que puede salvar vidas.

LLAME AL SECRETARIO DEL DEPARTAMENTO DE SALUD Y SERVICIOS HUMANOS, MICHAEL LEAVITT, AL 888-802-1207 (LIBRE DE COSTO) Y DILE:

"Las personas viviendo con SIDA en Puerto Rico se están muriendo porque usted no ha tomado acción para ayudarlas.

Necesitamos administración judicial inmediata para los fondos de SIDA en Puerto Rico para asegurar cuidado médico y prevención de VIH para las personas que no saben que tienen el virus.

Necesitamos una autoridad independiente que investigue el mal manejo de fondos y que desarrolle un plan para eliminarlo.

Y necesitamos acción inmediata para proveer herramientas de prevención de VIH a usuarios de drogas inyectables y esfuerzos de apoderamiento para luchar contra el estigma y la discriminación contra las personas viviendo con VIH/SIDA."
